Human practices at iGEM

Community Management

Community Management

One of the purposes of iGEM is to spread the knowledge of synthetic biology and connect scientists and the society. The general public does not always accept the tools that synthetic biology uses and their products. Most of the times, this is simply due to a misunderstanding of basic concepts. To help improving the situation, you can interact with people from your area by doing events, or use the social media to reach a greater number of people. Managing the social media wisely is not a hard tas

Measuring public opinion

Measuring public opinion

Many iGEM teams conduct surveys as a part of their Human Practices iGEM project. There are two common motivations for measuring the public opinion; to learn more about attitudes concerning controversial aspects of synthetic biology or for measuring the characteristics of the population which are relevant to their iGEM project. Let’s talk more about what you can do and how.

Giving back to the community

Giving back to the community

iGEM as a competition is not just about doing science, but rather doing OPEN science. Being part of the iGEM community means being actively involved in the proliferation of societal integration within synthetic biology and science, in general. There are many things that you, as part of an iGEM team, can do in order to help society, whether it be as a direct application of your scientific project, or as an additional study or planned activity.

Science vulgarisation

Science vulgarisation

As scientists, we have a responsibility to the public to share what we are working on and the results we have obtained. Scientific innovations have fueled modern society yet many people avoid science as it is perceived to be difficult or obscure. Therefore it is important to be clear and understood when presenting your project to the general public.

Collaborations between iGEM teams

Collaborations between iGEM teams

Collaborations in iGEM are important, useful, and advised. They help you meet new people and learn skills that you didn’t have before or didn’t consider relevant. Collaborations can come in many forms. The easiest is contacting other iGEM teams (high school or collegiate) to help you with some part of the project or collaborate together to create something new.
